How pricing is usually structured
Most senior move managers price one of three ways: an hourly rate, a flat project fee based on a walkthrough, or tiered packages that bundle a set scope of work. Hourly rates nationally tend to fall somewhere in the range of sixty to one hundred and twenty five dollars per hour, and full service projects are frequently quoted as a single figure after an in home estimate.
Third party costs, such as the moving truck, the dumpster, the cleaners, or the estate sale commission, are typically separate from the coordination fee. Ask about this directly, because it is the most common source of surprise on an invoice.
What drives the number up or down
Volume of belongings is the single biggest factor. A two bedroom apartment and a four bedroom house with a full basement are entirely different projects even if the destination is the same.
Other drivers: how much sorting is needed versus simply packing, whether the home also has to be emptied and prepared for sale, how compressed the timeline is, whether family members are available to help, and how far the new home is.
Where the money actually goes back to you
Coordination often pays for part of itself. Fewer moving hours because the sort happened first. Fewer items shipped that will not fit. Donation receipts documented properly. Estate sale and consignment proceeds that would otherwise have gone to a dumpster.
There is also the cost that does not appear on any invoice: the vacation days adult children spend flying in, and the strain a rushed move puts on a parent's health and on family relationships.
Questions to ask before you sign
What exactly is included, and what is billed separately? Who is on site on move day, and are they employees or subcontractors? Are you insured and bonded? Can you provide references from families in situations like ours? What happens if the timeline changes?
A good answer to those five questions tells you more than the price does.
